The History of the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame
In 2005, six Sport Organizations in the Town of Aurora met to discuss how sport could be organized to benefit of all amateur sport in the Town. This Organization, known as the Aurora Community Sport Council, grew and delegations were made to the Town Council suggesting that a Sports Hall of Fame should be developed to celebrate our sport history, but time and again the project was abandoned.
In 2011 the newly incorporated Sport Aurora, now with 27 Member Organizations, included the development of a Sports Hall of Fame as a priority within their Strategic Plan. An Aurora Sports Hall of Fame Organizing Committee (ASHoF-OC) was formed that included a variety of stakeholders with the objective to research this possibility. In November 2012 a Feasibility Study was completed and refined for submission to the Ontario Trillium Foundation in July of 2013. In November of that year a Grant in the amount of $192,500.00 over three years was awarded. The ASHoF Organizing Committee (ASHoF-OC) made a recommendation to Sport Aurora that the ASHoF become incorporated as a stand-alone entity and asked that a Board of Governors be appointed from the stakeholders. The process for the appointment of these Board of Governors was approved by the Sport Aurora Board in November of 2012. The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame continues to be supported by Sport Aurora by five of nine Board of Governors seats being appointed through Sport Aurora. Sport Aurora believes, supports and promotes the Mission of the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame: To Honour, celebrate, preserve and share the outstanding contributions of those who have brought recognition to Aurora through sport and to:
- Select and Induct worthy members of the Aurora Sport Hall of Fame.
- Collect, store and display sport artifacts that represent the Inductees participation in sport as well as other worthy events and sport activities related to sport in the Town.
- Raise funds to support the activities of the Aurora Sport Hall of Fame.
- Publicize and share sport history within and outside the Town.
Without Sport Aurora there would be no Aurora Sports Hall of Fame and we thank all those who have contributed to the development of the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame and to those who continue to build and celebrate sport in this Community.
