Raya Pourtehrani is an exceptional individual on and off the basketball court at her school.
From the point guard position, Raya plays a pivotal role in the overall game plan of coaches Katie Goodman and Jordan Denton’s Dr. G.W. Williams basketball squad. The coaches are not only impressed by Raya’s floor general talents but also with her willingness to attack the basket and by her competitive drive to rebound the basketball. Raya is unrelenting on the court and she leads by example with her teammates. Overcoming adversity on the floor allows her to push forward according to the coaching staff.
Coach Goodman emphasizes that Raya has the respect of her teammates and classmates by caring for those around her at the school. The honour roll student’s positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to collaborate make her not just a standout student-athlete but also a role model for her peers. Her time management skills in successfully juggling basketball and her studies are to be commended.
Raya enjoys playing rep basketball outside of school hours and she is also known as “Coach Raya” when it comes to work. Her part-time job coaching boys and girls under the age of 10 at the B-Ballerz Athletic Academy allows her to give back at her young age to the sport that she loves. This opportunity, engaging with other youth, has played a large role in developing greater confidence, fitness and social skills for the coach instructors.
A Grade 12 student, Raya aspires to study Computer Science if her goal of being formally accepted at the University of Waterloo comes to fruition for the 2025-26 school year.
Congratulations, Raya!
