CONTEST CLOSED: Contest Announced to Name New Education Section of Aurora Sports Hall of Fame September 20, 2016

(AURORA, ON) September 19, 2016 – The Aurora Sports Hall of Fame (ASHOF) is launching a contest to get Aurora’s help to name its new education section when it relocates to the Stronach Arena & Recreational Complex (SARC) in November.

“The goal of the ASHOF Education Committee is to help students, teachers and school administrators celebrate the ways in which sport culture and heritage are passed through generations,” said Kristen Dajia, Chair of the ASHOF Education Committee. “As educators, we know that from a young age, individuals learn the life skills that they will use later in adulthood.  The new education section at SARC will inspire students of all ages to be physically literate through educational activities corresponding to the inductees of the ASHOF.”

Other new elements for the greatly expanded Sports Hall of Fame include an interactive wall, inductee profiles, artifacts and an expanded sport heritage display.

“ASHOF’s education programs are vital to the Hall’s success and are part of the Celebration of Sport in this community,” said Nancy Black, Executive Director of ASHOF. “ASHOF is grateful to the 2016 Aurora Mayor¹s Charity Golf Classic for providing support this year.  Funds from this donation will be used to advance programs such as ‘Sport History Alive’ which will be made available to numerous schools for the upcoming 2016/2017 school year.’

The Grand Re-opening of the Hall on November 5th entails the services of exhibit coordinator Michelle Johnson to oversee the move in conjunction with Aurora Museum and Archives.

“The new education section will provide a permanent place to view the Photo Essay Contest winners and Future Hall of Famers,” said Johnson.  “Along with this, it will display content related to physical literacy, athletic excellence and well-being in a fun and engaging way.”

The contest to name the new education section is open to both elementary and high school students who reside within the Town of Aurora. The deadline for submissions is October 7, 2016. A maximum of 40 characters is required, and entries can be made at https://aurorashof.ca/. The winner will receive a complimentary ticket to the Induction Ceremony on November 2, and will be invited to the Grand Opening of the new Aurora Sports Hall of Fame on November 5.

If you are a community partner who would like to support ASHOF in further advancing its mission through education at SARC, online and in classrooms, please contact Nancy Black, Executive Director at executive.director@aurorashof.ca.
